The orchestral score for Vacuity was composed and orchestrated in the spring of 2011. I worked closely with film student Michael Matzur to determine the right emotion and to capture the essence of the story with the music. With assistance from conductor Eric Funk, recording engineer Jeremiah Slovarp, and 40 volunteer musicians from the MSU Symphony Orchestra, twelve minutes of music were recorded from seven cues. This soundtrack was awarded best original score in the 2011 Tracy Awards.
Composed and orchestrated in the fall of 2010, the score for this film was a unique and inspiring challenge. There were only two lines of dialogue so much of the story was told through the composition. The score came together with coordination from conductor Shuichi Komiyama, recording engineer Jeremiah Slovarp, and 50 volunteer musicians from the MSU Symphony Orchestra. There were four cues and nearly 5 minutes of music recorded for this short film.
This hour long NASA-funded documentary is currently in post production, and I am very motivated to begin composing. The mood of the film will be upbeat and feature organic beats, acoustic guitar, synths and strings.
Untamed is a student film currently being created in Bozeman Montana at MSU. Having recently reviewed the script, I am imagining trumpet and string melodies that will create a dark texture for this film..
Out of five nominations, the soundtrack for Vacuity was awarded the best original score at the 2011 Tracy Awards - an awards ceremony that showcases productions including best original score, best picture, best director and more. This event features the best senior films from students at Montana State University Bozeman. I earned the award while I was a junior in the Music Technology program.
During the Fall of 2010, I submitted an audition tape demonstrating my trumpet improvisation skills to Jazz Montana. I was awarded with a scholarship for outstanding jazz soloist.
I have experience composing many different styles which include full orchestral works, string quartets and pieces from my touring funk rock band Cure for the Common. With my internship at Jereco Studios, I had expierence mixing, mastering and recording with software such as Logic Pro, Pro-Tools and others. I produced a variety of tracks for college courses and for my band. I have studied sound synthesis in depth and used virtual orchestration to show film directors previews of scores prior to recording.
My projected completion of a B.A. in Music Technology is May 2012. Currently, I am motivated by my independent study with composer Eric Funk where I am exploring more deeply into the world of orchestration and composition. The Music Technology Degree offers a unique opportunity because it combines composition, music theory, and orchestration with music production and audio engineering. Relevant classes are listed below.
